The National Mall’s Reflecting Pool has a fresh coat of paint. And Americans are not impressed.
‘It looks black,’ said one tourist from Ohio, squinting at the dark surface. Another muttered something about ‘a giant puddle of ink.’ The internet, predictably, has gone into overdrive.
This is classic Washington. A mundane maintenance project becomes a political Rorschach test. The National Park Service says the dark liner is standard. It helps prevent algae. But try telling that to the commentariat.
‘They’ve turned the Reflecting Pool into a mirror for the soul of the nation,’ tweeted a professor. ‘Dark and murky.’
Opposition MPs are circling. One backbencher called it ‘a metaphor for this government’s transparency.’ Another claimed it was ‘a deliberate attempt to change the colour of a national landmark.’
Let’s be clear: this is a liner. It’s black. It will eventually fill with water and reflect the sky. But in the meantime, the optics are terrible. The White House is reportedly ‘monitoring the situation.’
I spoke to a Whitehall source off the record. ‘They’re panicking,’ they said. ‘This is the kind of story that sticks.’
Indeed. The internet never forgets. And neither does the electorate.
For now, the pool remains empty. Workers are still adjusting the liner. But the damage is done. Americans think their Reflecting Pool is black. And in politics, perception is reality.
