A Brazilian court has convicted Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, on charges of conspiracy against the United States. The verdict, delivered in Brasília, marks the most serious legal reprisal yet against the Bolsonaro family following the January 2023 attacks on government buildings. The court found that Flávio Bolsonaro colluded with US-based operatives to destabilise the Biden administration, a plot that included cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns.
Sentencing is expected next week. The case has immediate diplomatic implications. Brazil and the United Kingdom share a bilateral extradition treaty dating to 1847, modernised in 1997, which allows for the transfer of individuals convicted of crimes in either jurisdiction.
Although the conviction is Brazilian, legal experts note that the treaty’s provisions for mutual legal assistance could enable British authorities to pursue separate charges if any conspiratorial activity touched UK soil. The Crown Prosecution Service has declined to comment. Flávio Bolsonaro’s lawyer has announced an appeal, calling the trial “a political vendetta.
” The former president, currently under investigation for his own role in the January 2023 riots, has not yet reacted. The verdict underscores the growing international legal scrutiny of the Bolsonaro family and raises questions about the scope of extradition agreements in an era of transnational political crime. The British Foreign Office has stated it is monitoring the case but has not received a formal extradition request.
