Medics in Gaza City have confirmed at least 11 dead after a fresh wave of Israeli air strikes tore through two residential buildings before dawn. The strikes come hours after diplomatic sources admitted that ceasefire talks had effectively collapsed, with both sides blaming the other for the breakdown. Survivors pulled from the rubble described scenes of chaos.
One man, his clothes caked in dust, told our correspondent: "We were sleeping. The whole world shook."
The dead include three children, according to hospital records. The Israeli Defence Forces said the targets were "command centres"
used by Hamas, but offered no immediate evidence. The strikes mark the deadliest single incident in the city in weeks. International pressure for a truce has mounted, but on the ground, there is only more fear.
The UN has warned that continued violence will push Gaza's health system to the brink of collapse. For now, the bombs continue to fall.
