Scotland Yard today arrested a suspected key figure in a people smuggling network responsible for dozens of Channel crossings, following an undercover investigation by the BBC. Sources confirm the man, identified only as 'Ahmed K.', was detained at a safe house in East London early this morning.
Uncovered documents reveal he controlled logistics for at least 50 crossings in 2023, charging migrants up to £8,000 per journey. The BBC sting, filmed over three months, shows the suspect bragging about bribing French border police and using encrypted messaging apps to coordinate launches. A Home Office source said: 'This is a significant blow to the criminal gangs exploiting human misery.
We are working with Europol to dismantle the entire network.' The arrest comes as the government faces mounting pressure over the record 45,000 crossings this year. Critics, however, argue that targeting individual smugglers will do little to stem the tide while safe routes remain closed.
The suspect is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court tomorrow. This is a developing story. More follows.
