Lucas, who won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing in 1978 for her work on the first Star Wars film, died surrounded by family at her home in Marin County, California. The cause of death was not disclosed but is understood to have followed a long illness.
Her death marks the end of an era for Lucasfilm, the company she helped build alongside her then-husband George Lucas. While George Lucas conceived the galaxy far, far away, it was Marcia who gave it rhythm and heart. Her contributions to the original trilogy were vast. She restructured the final act of Star Wars to give the Death Star attack its tension. She rescued The Empire Strikes Back from an overly bleak cut, infusing it with the romance and character moments that made it a classic. She did the same for Return of the Jedi, ensuring the emotional payoff for audiences.
