A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for plotting a terrorist attack at a Taylor Swift concert in London. The plot, which targeted Wembley Stadium during the pop star’s Eras Tour in August 2023, was disrupted by British intelligence services before it could be carried out.
The defendant, identified as Ahmed Rashid, was arrested in July 2023 after MI5 and counter-terrorism police intercepted communications indicating his intention to detonate an explosive device at the venue. Rashid, a British national of Pakistani descent, had been radicalised online and had expressed support for the Islamic State group.
During the trial at the Old Bailey, the court heard that Rashid had researched bomb-making instructions and purchased chemicals for the device. He had also scouted the stadium’s layout and identified high-traffic entry points. A forensic analysis of his devices revealed a detailed plan, including a timelined attack sequence.
The sentencing judge, Mr Justice Spencer, described the plot as “sophisticated and highly dangerous” and noted that it was “only the vigilance of the security services that prevented mass casualties”. The concert, attended by 90,000 fans, went ahead as scheduled after enhanced security measures were put in place.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Jukes, head of UK Counter-Terrorism Policing, stated: “This case demonstrates the relentless work of our officers and partners to identify and disrupt threats. The public can be assured that we take all credible threats seriously.”
The case has reignited debates about the radicalisation of young people online. The Home Secretary has announced a review of the government’s Prevent strategy, emphasising the need to counter extremist content on social media platforms.
Rashid will serve a minimum of 12 years before being considered for parole. He is expected to be subject to a 10-year extended licence period upon release.
