The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has accused former United States President Donald Trump of fabricating a claim that she had ‘begged’ him for a photograph at the G7 summit. The incident underscores growing tensions between the two leaders and raises questions about the reliability of diplomatic accounts coming from the Trump camp.
According to a statement released by Meloni’s office, the prime minister rejected Trump’s version of events, describing it as ‘entirely false’. The dispute centres on a photo opportunity at the G7 summit in June 2023, where Trump claimed that Meloni had approached him repeatedly to secure a photo. Meloni’s representatives have categorically denied this, stating that she did not request any such meeting.
Diplomatic sources suggest that the incident is indicative of a broader deterioration in transatlantic relations. Trump has been critical of European leaders, particularly over defence spending and trade. Meloni, who leads a right-wing coalition, has sought to maintain close ties with Washington while asserting Italian sovereignty. The row may complicate cooperation on shared priorities, including NATO commitments and support for Ukraine.
The G7 photo op itself was a routine part of the summit schedule, with leaders often being photographed together to project unity. However, Trump’s characterisation of the event as a personal favour to Meloni has caused consternation in Rome. Italian officials have pointed to the prime minister’s extensive international experience, noting that she has attended multiple such summits without incident.
This is not the first time Trump has been accused of misrepresenting interactions with foreign leaders. During his presidency, several world leaders, including former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, contradicted his accounts of private conversations. Critics argue that such fabrications undermine diplomatic trust and weaken the credibility of American leadership.
For Meloni, the stakes are high. She is positioning herself as a key interlocutor between Europe and the United States, especially with the upcoming US presidential election. Any perception of subservience to Trump could damage her domestic standing and her ability to influence European policy.
In response to the controversy, the White House has declined to comment, referring questions to Trump’s campaign team. Trump’s representatives have not yet responded to requests for clarification. The episode adds to a list of diplomatic faux pas that have characterised Trump’s post-presidency, including his recent praise for authoritarian leaders.
Analysts believe that the incident may have limited long-term impact, as both leaders have more pressing issues to address. However, it highlights the fragility of personal relationships in international diplomacy. For now, Meloni’s outright denial offers a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes tensions that often remain hidden from public view.
