Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has publicly dismissed as false a claim by former US President Donald Trump that she was photographed “begging” world leaders at the G7 summit. The incident underscores the mounting tensions between European allies and Trump’s campaign narrative ahead of the 2024 US election.
According to Trump, who made the allegation during a rally in New Hampshire, the image purportedly showed Meloni pleading with other G7 leaders over trade disputes. However, Meloni’s office swiftly released a statement denying the existence of such a photograph. “No such image exists,” a spokesperson said, adding that the Prime Minister’s conduct at the summit was consistent with Italy’s firm advocacy for its national interests.
The G7 summit, held in June 2023 in Bavaria, Germany, covered pressing global issues, including the war in Ukraine, climate change, and economic resilience. Meloni, who leads the right-wing Brothers of Italy party, has sought to position herself as a strong but pragmatic figure on the European stage. Her government has maintained a hard line on migration and fiscal discipline, yet she has also pursued closer ties with the EU on defence and energy.
Trump’s accusations come as he escalates his rhetoric against foreign leaders, particularly those from Europe. He has previously criticised NATO allies for failing to meet defence spending targets and has threatened to withdraw US support if re-elected. Meloni’s rebuttal reflects the broader frustration among European leaders with Trump’s unpredictable foreign policy approach.
Italian political analysts have noted that Meloni’s response is calculated to project strength and credibility. “She cannot afford to appear weak or subservient, especially given her domestic base’s scepticism of globalist institutions,” said Alessandra Ricci, a professor of political science at the University of Rome. “By calling out Trump’s falsehood, she reinforces her image as a leader who stands up for Italy, even against a potential US president.”
The incident also highlights the evolving dynamics within the G7. While the club of wealthy democracies has sought to present a united front on major challenges, internal divisions have resurfaced, particularly on trade and climate policy. Meloni’s government has been more cautious on green transition targets, aligning with other conservative-led nations in the bloc.
Trump’s continued attacks on foreign leaders have drawn sharp criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans. Senator John McCain’s daughter, Megan McCain, called the claim “baseless” and a distraction from substantive policy debates. However, Trump’s base appears unmoved by the controversy, with many viewing his confrontational style as a strength.
The absence of photographic evidence has not deterred Trump’s campaign from repeating the claim, which has been circulated by some conservative media outlets. Meloni’s denial, while definitive, may not fully dispel the narrative among Trump supporters. This underscores a broader challenge for international leaders confronting the former president’s disregard for factual accuracy.
For observers, this episode is a reminder of the fragility of transatlantic relations. With the US election approaching, European leaders are bracing for a potential return to the transactional diplomacy of the Trump years. Meloni’s swift pushback signals a readiness to defend her country’s reputation and her own authority, even at the risk of escalating a personal war of words.
The G7 host, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has declined to comment on the dispute, reflecting a desire to avoid further politicisation of the summit. Yet the damage to the group’s image of unity is palpable. As one senior EU diplomat put it, “When a former US president makes baseless claims about a sitting ally, it corrodes trust at a time when we need it most.”
Meloni, for her part, has moved on. Her government this week announced new energy deals with Algeria and stepped up support for Ukraine. But the shadow of the alleged photograph lingers, a testament to the lasting impact of Trump’s rhetoric on global politics.
