Three people have been killed and dozens injured in a stampede during World Cup celebrations in Mexico City, authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred late on Sunday evening in the city's historic Zócalo square, where tens of thousands had gathered to watch the final match on giant screens. Witnesses reported that a surge in the crowd, possibly triggered by a false alarm or a confrontation, caused panic.
Emergency services arrived within minutes, but three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured have been taken to local hospitals, with some in critical condition. Mexico City's mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed condolences and announced an investigation into the tragedy.
The event underscores the challenges of managing large public gatherings, particularly in high-emotion settings such as World Cup finals.
