Marks & Spencer has announced a 1,000-place traineeship programme aimed at shoring up the UK's manufacturing base. The retail giant's flagship initiative, dubbed "Made for M&S,"
is set to launch next month, targeting young people aged 18 to 24. Sources confirm the programme will cover textiles, food production, and logistics, with a focus on regions hit hardest by industrial decline. Uncovered documents show M&S has committed £15 million to the scheme, which includes guaranteed interviews for successful trainees.
Critics, however, question whether this is a genuine lifeline or a PR move. Union reps have noted that previous similar pledges by other retailers failed to deliver lasting jobs. The company insists this is a long-term investment, but the proof will be in the employment figures.
