A confidential United Nations report has documented the murder of more than 700 civilians by Myanmar's military junta in the six months following its February 2021 coup. The findings, obtained by Reuters, detail systematic violence against peaceful protesters, ethnic minorities, and political opponents. The report attributes the killings to security forces and allied militias, with the deadliest incidents occurring in the Bago, Mandalay, and Shan regions.
The UN special rapporteur on Myanmar, Tom Andrews, described the scale of the violence as 'shocking' and called for international action, including targeted sanctions and an arms embargo. The junta has denied the allegations, labelling them as fabricated by foreign interests.
