The slaughter of dozens of civilians in Myanmar’s Sagaing region has laid bare the junta’s disregard for human life. Witnesses report that soldiers opened fire on villagers, many of whom were women and children, in what appears to be a deliberate act of terror. The UK government, in a rare show of diplomatic urgency, has demanded an emergency session of the UN Security Council.
‘This is not a tragedy. It is a war crime,’ said Foreign Secretary James Cleverly. For the working people of Myanmar, already crushed by poverty and military rule, this marks another chapter in a nightmare that began with the coup.
