The Nigerian film industry has lost a prominent figure. Alexx Ekubo, the actor and model whose career spanned a decade of leading roles in Nollywood productions, has died at the age of 40. His family confirmed the news on Sunday, though a cause of death was not immediately disclosed. A statement released by Ekubo’s representatives said he died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Lagos.
Ekubo rose to prominence in the early 2010s with his breakout role in the romantic comedy “Weekend Getaway,” which earned him widespread recognition. He went on to star in more than 30 films, including “In the Name of Love,” “The Wedding Party” and “The Island,” winning the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2019 for his performance in “The Lost Soul.” His portrayals of charismatic but vulnerable characters made him a household name across West Africa.
The British Film Institute (BFI) paid tribute on Monday, describing Ekubo as “a magnetic presence on screen” who “brought depth and elegance to Nollywood.” The BFI, which has increasingly curated Nigerian films for its seasons, noted that Ekubo’s work exemplified the global reach of African cinema. “His talent transcended borders, and his loss will be felt by audiences worldwide,” the statement read.
Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, is the second-largest film industry in the world by volume, producing over 2,000 films annually. Ekubo’s death at a relatively young age has prompted reflection on the pressures faced by actors in the industry, which has seen a number of high-profile deaths in recent years from health complications and accidents. Colleagues and fans have begun posting tributes on social media, remembering his professionalism and warmth.
Ekubo is survived by his mother and two sisters. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later this week.
