A significant explosion at a shipyard in Staten Island, New York, has left one person dead and dozens of firefighters injured, according to local authorities. The blast occurred at around 10:30 local time on Wednesday at the Caddell Dry Dock and Repair Company facility, a major industrial site on the island's north shore. Emergency services responded swiftly, with over 100 firefighters dispatched to the scene.
The deceased has been identified as a civilian worker at the yard. Forty-five firefighters sustained non-life-threatening injuries, ranging from burns to smoke inhalation. Five remain hospitalised in stable condition.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the New York Fire Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Preliminary reports suggest an industrial accident involving welding equipment and combustible materials. The shipyard, which specialises in vessel repairs and dry-docking, has been shut down pending the inquiry.
This incident underscores the inherent dangers of heavy industrial work, even in facilities with stringent safety protocols. Further updates are expected as the investigation proceeds.
