Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the abandonment of two young boys by a roadside in Portugal, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The case, which has drawn international attention, involves a cross-border investigation with British police providing assistance to Portuguese authorities.
The boys, aged two and four, were discovered on Tuesday morning near the town of Silves in the Algarve region. A passer-by alerted local police after spotting the children alone on a rural road. The boys were taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and have since been placed in the care of Portuguese child protection services. Both are reported to be in good health.
Portuguese police identified the suspects as a British man and a Portuguese woman, both in their 20s. They were detained at a residence in the Algarve late Tuesday evening. Authorities have not released their names but confirmed that the pair are believed to be known to the children. The motive for the abandonment remains under investigation, with early reports suggesting a possible domestic dispute.
The UK National Crime Agency confirmed it is liaising with Portuguese counterparts. “We are assisting the Portuguese authorities with their inquiries,” a spokesperson said. “This is a standard cross-border cooperation in a case involving British nationals.” British consular officials have also been in contact with the families of the individuals arrested.
The abandonment has prompted concern from child welfare groups in both countries. Portugal’s Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People has launched its own assessment into the family circumstances. In the UK, local authorities are preparing to support any repatriation efforts should the children be returned to Britain.
Legal experts note that if the suspects are charged and convicted in Portugal, they could face up to five years in prison for abandonment of a minor. Extradition procedures remain a possibility if the case takes on a cross-border dimension, though no formal requests have been made.
This incident marks a rare case of cross-border child abandonment in Europe. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The investigation is ongoing.
