A Palestinian baby has been killed by Israeli gunfire in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry has confirmed. The infant, aged three months, was struck by a bullet during clashes near the town of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron. The ministry identified the child as Aysha al-Rimawi.
The Israeli military said it was investigating the incident. Witnesses reported that Israeli forces fired live rounds and tear gas at Palestinians who were throwing stones during a raid. The killing is likely to further inflame tensions in the region, where violence has escalated since the Hamas attacks on Israel in October.
The United Nations has called for restraint and an independent investigation.
