A series of powerful aftershocks in the Philippines has prompted the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to issue a rare emergency alert for British nationals in the region. The quakes, occurring in the Visayas and Mindanao regions, have reached magnitudes exceeding 6.0 on the Richter scale, with the most severe striking near Cebu City.
This follows a significant seismic event earlier this week. The FCDO warns that further tremors are likely, potentially endangering infrastructure already weakened by the primary quake. British nationals are advised to register with the embassy and follow local guidance.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reports over 200 aftershocks to date, complicating rescue and relief operations.
