The National Park Service has opened an investigation into the deliberate vandalism of the Reflecting Pool liner on the National Mall. According to an official statement released this morning, the damage was inflicted using a sharp blade, causing the pool to drain overnight. The incident, described as a targeted act of destruction, has prompted security reviews at the monument.
Park service officials have not yet identified a suspect or motive. The pool, a shallow basin between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, is a significant symbol of national commemoration. It remains closed to the public pending repairs, which are expected to take several weeks.
The Metropolitan Police Department is assisting with the inquiry.
