A roof collapse at a religious school in Karachi, Pakistan, has killed at least 14 children and injured 17 others, officials confirmed on Thursday. The incident occurred during morning prayers at a madrassa in the city's densely populated Korangi district. Rescue workers spent hours extracting victims from the rubble, with the death toll expected to rise.
The building, a two-storey structure, collapsed without warning. Local authorities have launched an investigation into structural integrity and compliance with safety regulations. British charities active in the region, including Save the Children UK and Islamic Relief, issued a joint statement calling for an urgent audit of all school buildings in Pakistan to prevent further tragedies.
The statement noted that thousands of similar institutions operate without proper oversight, leaving children at risk. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed condolences and ordered a comprehensive review of building safety standards nationwide. The collapsing roof is the latest in a series of deadly accidents due to substandard construction in the country, following a pattern of neglect in building code enforcement.
