Russian troops are massing along the front lines in eastern Ukraine ahead of a major offensive in the Donbas region, according to Western intelligence assessments. The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence reported on Wednesday that Moscow had reinforced its southern and eastern command sectors with additional battalion tactical groups, heavy armour, and artillery. The build-up is designed to consolidate Russian gains and encircle Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
The UK’s foreign secretary warned that the coming campaign could result in a “catastrophic humanitarian toll”, with civilians trapped in urban combat zones and critical infrastructure deliberately targeted. The statement came as satellite imagery showed columns of Russian vehicles converging on the strategic port city of Mariupol, where fighting has already reduced neighbourhoods to rubble.
Ukrainian officials said they were bracing for an assault across a 500-kilometre front. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces were shelling civilian areas in Kharkiv and Sumy, while attempting to break through defensive lines near Izium. The scale of the build-up suggests a deliberate shift in Russian strategy from a failed lightning campaign towards a protracted war of attrition.
Analysts predict the offensive will rely on overwhelming firepower rather than manoeuvre, with Russian troops expected to use massed artillery and air strikes to level Ukrainian positions before advancing. The tactics echo those used by Russian forces during the first Chechen war, where Grozny was systematically destroyed.
The humanitarian implications are severe. The UN estimates that over 10 million people have already been displaced. The upcoming offensive threatens to create a new wave of refugees and to cut off remaining escape corridors. The UK has pledged additional humanitarian aid and defensive weapons for Ukraine, but has ruled out direct military intervention. The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts stalled as Moscow pursues maximalist goals. The coming days will test the resilience of Ukrainian defences and the resolve of Western allies.
