British intelligence has reported a significant concentration of Russian troops and armour in the vicinity of a strategically located Donbas city, signalling the likelihood of a renewed offensive in the coming days. The assessment, shared with allied partners on Thursday, cites satellite imagery and intercepted communications indicating the redeployment of units to forward positions.
Analysts suggest the target is the city of Chasiv Yar, a rail hub west of Bakhmut. The area has seen sustained artillery bombardment in recent weeks, consistent with Russian tactics of softening defences before a ground assault. Ukrainian forces have reinforced their lines but face shortages of ammunition.
The UK Ministry of Defence noted that Russia has committed elements of at least two motor rifle brigades to the sector. Logistical support has been expanded, with engineers bridging canals and repairing roads. This mirrors the pattern observed before the fall of Avdiivka in February.
Ukraine’s General Staff acknowledged the buildup and said it was preparing defensive positions. President Zelensky will brief allies via videolink on Friday. The United States has announced an additional $1 billion in military aid, though delivery timelines remain unclear.
Military experts caution that Russia may be seeking to exploit political uncertainty in Ukraine as the country awaits further Western support. The coming weeks are expected to test the resilience of Ukrainian lines.
