Aryna Sabalenka, the world number two, abruptly ended her post-match press conference at the French Open on Wednesday, citing a lack of respect from journalists. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from British tennis officials, who accused the tournament organisers of failing to protect players from intrusive questioning.
Sabalenka, who had just defeated her opponent in straight sets, walked out of the media room after three minutes, visibly frustrated. She stated that she felt “disrespected” by questions she deemed repetitive and aggressive, particularly regarding her previous comments on the political situation in Belarus. The Belarusian player has faced persistent scrutiny over her stance on the war in Ukraine, a subject she has previously declined to discuss.
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) issued a statement condemning the treatment of Sabalenka. “Players are entitled to a working environment free from harassment. The press conference crossed the line into interrogation, which is unacceptable,” the LTA said. The All England Club, which oversees Wimbledon, echoed these concerns, calling for a review of media protocols at Grand Slam events.
The French Tennis Federation (FFT) defended its procedures, stating that journalists had adhered to standard guidelines. However, several British journalists present at the press conference acknowledged that the tone of questioning was unusually confrontational.
Sabalenka’s exit is the latest in a series of player-media tensions at Grand Slams. Naomi Osaka withdrew from the 2021 French Open citing mental health concerns related to press obligations. The incident has reignited debate over the balance between media access and player welfare.
British tennis officials have called for independent oversight of media interactions at major tournaments. The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) has also voiced support for Sabalenka, urging the establishment of clear boundaries for press conferences.
The FFT has not indicated whether it will revise its media policy. Sabalenka is scheduled to play her next match on Friday.
