A Saudi Arabian helicopter crash has killed 14 people, prompting a review of British defence training protocols. The incident occurred during a routine training exercise in the Asir region, near the Yemeni border. Among the dead were military personnel from the Saudi armed forces, according to a statement from the Saudi defence ministry.
The helicopter, a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk, was part of a joint training programme overseen by British defence contractors. Whitehall sources have confirmed that British officials are reviewing safety procedures in light of the accident, though they stress that no evidence of negligence has emerged. The British embassy in Riyadh expressed condolences but declined to comment further.
The crash adds to a series of aviation accidents in the Gulf region, raising questions about the sustainability of high-tempo training operations. Analysts point to the strain on crews and equipment as frequent exercises against Houthi forces in Yemen continue. The Saudi-led coalition has not yet released a full report on the cause of the crash.
