The British expatriate community in Los Angeles is reeling after the fatal stabbing of acclaimed character actor James Handy, 72, outside his home in the Silver Lake district. Handy, a familiar face in Hollywood with roles in *The Wire*, *Curb Your Enthusiasm*, and *Mad Men*, was pronounced dead at the scene late Tuesday night. His girlfriend’s 27-year-old son has been arrested and is being held on suspicion of murder, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed.
Handy, originally from London, moved to the United States in the 1970s and built a career that spanned five decades. He was known for his versatility, often playing authority figures or gruff but endearing characters. Colleagues described him as a consummate professional with a gentle demeanour.
The details of the attack remain sparse. Police responded to reports of a disturbance around 10 p.m. local time. Officers arrived to find Handy with multiple stab wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody several blocks from the scene.
Friends and neighbours expressed disbelief. “He was such a lovely man, always had time for a chat,” said a close friend who wished to remain anonymous. “This is a tragedy. He didn’t deserve this.”
The British consulate in Los Angeles has offered condolences and is providing assistance to Handy’s family. In a statement, a spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of James Handy, a cherished member of our community. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Handy’s work extended beyond acting; he was also a vocal advocate for renewable energy and climate action, often participating in charity events. This additional facet of his life underscores the loss felt by many. As the investigation continues, the focus shifts to the legal proceedings ahead. The suspect is expected to appear in court later this week.
