A thin, strained voice crackles down the satellite phone from a cargo vessel stranded just inside the Strait of Hormuz. It is the fourth day since an undeclared blockade choked off this crucial waterway. The voice belongs to a 52-year-old chief engineer from Sunderland. He has not slept properly for 72 hours. His crew of twelve, a mix of Indian, Filipino and British men, is running low on fresh water. The air conditioning has failed. Temperatures in the engine room are hitting 50 degrees Celsius.
"We are simply done in," the engineer tells me, his accent thick with exhaustion. "The anxiety is crushing. Every time a patrol boat circles, we think it is the end. We have families at home who cannot get any answers."
This is not a geopolitical game. This is the raw edge of a crisis that is squeezing the life out of ordinary seafarers. More than 30 vessels are now known to be trapped in an unofficial holding pattern near the strait, with supplies of food and fuel rapidly dwindling. The International Transport Workers' Federation has declared a "level red" alert for the region, citing mounting evidence of psychological breakdowns among crews.
Among them is the crew of the M/V Northern Star, a bulk carrier registered in Panama but crewed by men from South Shields, Manila and Mumbai. Their original passage through the strait was halted by an Iranian corvette warning ship they were now entering a "restricted military zone". No formal explanation was given. No timeframe for release.
"We are not soldiers. We are not diplomats," says the chief engineer. "We are just working men trying to get home. The stress is making people snap. One of our deckhands broke down crying yesterday. He thought he would never see his daughter again."
The blockade is not a war but something more insidious. It is a slow strangulation of maritime trade that hits the most vulnerable first. In the past, such standoffs were resolved within hours. This one is dragging into its fifth day with no diplomatic breakthrough. The cost in human misery is mounting.
On the M/V Northern Star, the crew has started rationing drinking water. The desalination unit is faulty. They have enough for maybe three more days. As I end the call with the chief engineer, he stops me. "Tell them we are not statistics. Tell them we just want to go home." The line goes dead. The blockade continues. And ordinary men, far from the corridors of power, pay the price.
