A man was fatally shot by Secret Service officers near the White House on Saturday after he allegedly opened fire on the security perimeter, law enforcement officials said. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m.
local time when a vehicle approached a checkpoint on the 1600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. According to the Secret Service, the driver refused to comply with instructions and then produced a firearm, discharging it in the direction of officers. Agents returned fire, striking the suspect.
Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene. No officers or bystanders were reported injured. The area was immediately secured, and the White House was placed on lockdown for several hours.
The identity of the suspect has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Metropolitan Police Department are conducting a joint investigation. The Secret Service has increased patrols around the perimeter as a precaution.
