A man who survived a shark attack off a Sydney beach has woken from an induced coma, following a surgical procedure led by a British medical team. The patient, whose identity has not been released, was attacked on Sunday afternoon in waters near Bondi Beach, a popular swimming spot frequently patrolled by lifeguards. According to officials, the victim sustained severe injuries to his leg and torso, requiring immediate emergency intervention.
A team of surgeons from the United Kingdom, in Sydney for a medical exchange programme, performed the operation at St Vincent’s Hospital. The procedure involved extensive vascular reconstruction and tissue repair. Hospital sources confirm the patient is now conscious and responding to stimuli, though his condition remains critical.
Police have reopened the beach after a day-long closure, but have warned swimmers to remain vigilant. Shark sightings have increased along that stretch of coast in recent weeks, attributed to warmer currents and baitfish movements. The attack has reignited debate over shark mitigation strategies, including the use of drones and personal deterrent devices.
The British medical team is scheduled to return to the UK later this week.
