The fragile Gulf ceasefire has shattered. US and Iranian strikes exchanged in the past 72 hours signal a strategic pivot, not a mere escalation. For UK defence, this is a direct challenge to our maritime security architecture.
The Royal Navy’s operations in the Strait of Hormuz now face a two-pronged threat vector: kinetic strikes and asymmetric naval warfare. Analysts at RUSI have long warned that Iran’s drone swarms and mine-laying capabilities could neutralise our Type 45 destroyers without a single missile fired. The latest exchange confirms this intelligence failure.
We have underestimated Tehran’s ability to synchronise proxy attacks with conventional strikes. Our logistics chain in Bahrain is now within range of Iranian ballistic missiles. The question is not if but when a British vessel is hit.
The MoD must immediately review its air defence posture and reinforce the carrier strike group. Every day of delay is a gift to the adversary.
