The British Foreign Office has issued an urgent travel advisory after Thailand unilaterally reduced the visa-free stay period for UK passport holders from 60 to 30 days. The change, effective immediately, applies to all arrivals at Thai airports and land borders. Travellers already in the country will be permitted to complete their original 60-day stay.
The decision, announced by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, cited concerns over overstays and illegal labour. It marks a reversal of the longer visa-free periods introduced in 2023 to boost tourism. British officials have expressed disappointment, noting the lack of prior consultation.
The Foreign Office advises UK nationals to check their visa status and adjust travel plans accordingly. Longer-term visitors are now required to apply for a 60-day tourist visa at the Royal Thai Embassy before departure. The advisory warns that travellers overstaying the reduced period may face fines of 500 baht per day and potential detention.
The move is seen as part of a broader tightening of immigration rules across Southeast Asia. The Foreign Office says it is in contact with Thai authorities and will update its guidance as necessary.
