The Democratic primary in New York has just delivered a result that should chill the spine of every Western traditionalist. A slate of candidates backed by Mahmood Mamdani, the post-colonial theorist who once praised the Iranian Revolution as a ‘progressive’ force, has swept the board. The same Mamdani who dismissed the Holocaust as a ‘unique’ event only to argue that it is comparable to colonial atrocities.
The same Mamdani who commands a cult following in the academy for his withering critiques of the ‘liberal international order’. And now his acolytes will sit in the city council, the state legislature, perhaps even the mayor’s office. We are not witnessing a routine electoral shift.
We are witnessing the intellectual surrender of the American empire. The Atlanticist framework, the grand bargain that saw America and Europe unite in a common defence of liberal democracy, is being hollowed out from within. Mamdani’s victory in New York is a microcosm of a larger decadence.
When the political class throws in its lot with the very forces that despise the Enlightenment, the republic is already lost. The Roman Senate welcomed barbarian generals. We welcome barbarian ideologues.
The difference is that the Roman elite knew they were making a deal with the devil. Our elite thinks they are being virtuous.
