The spectacle of hundreds of arrests outside the Champions League final is not a law-and-order story. It is a cultural autopsy. British police, praised for their ‘tactical restraint’ after the Paris debacle, managed to contain the chaos. But the question is not whether they succeeded. It is why a football match now requires military-style crowd control.
We have seen this before. The fall of Rome was preceded by bread and circuses. The circuses became riots. The Praetorian Guard became the police. And the mob, no longer entertained, became the enemy of order. Today’s football hooligan is not a passionate fan. He is a nihilist. He comes not to support a team but to smash a shop window. He is the heir to the barbarians who sacked the Colosseum, not the gladiator who fought within it.
The comparison to the Victorian era is instructive. Then, football was a working-class ritual, rough but governed by a code. The gentleman amateur and the honest labourer shared a pitch. Now, the game is owned by oligarchs and sovereign wealth funds. The players are millionaire mercenaries. The fans are consumers, or worse, invaders. The Champions League, meant to unite Europe, now exposes its fractures. The Paris riots earlier this year were a preview. Now London. Next, Munich? Madrid?
British police are right to study tactics. But tactics cannot cure a spiritual disease. When a nation’s youth find meaning only in destruction, the problem is not policing. It is the void left by the collapse of family, church, and craft. The Victorians understood this. They built cathedrals of industry and morality. We build stadiums of excess and call it culture.
The arrests are a symptom. The diagnosis is intellectual decadence. We have taught our children that all hierarchies are oppressive, that there is no right or wrong, only power. Then we express surprise when they act like beasts. The hooligan is a logical conclusion of progressive education. He has been told he is a victim. He acts like one.
Do not blame the police. Blame a society that worships celebrity, rewards thuggery in the name of authenticity, and despises the very idea of civilisation. The Champions League riot is not a security problem. It is a prophecy. The barbarians are no longer at the gate. They are inside the stadium. And we are cheering them on.
