A school shooting in the Philippines has left three dead, the result of a bullying grudge. The UK has issued its standard condemnation of gun violence. But such platitudes miss the deeper decay.
This is not merely a crime but a symptom of a society that has lost its moral compass, echoing the fall of Rome where civic virtue collapsed into petty vengeance. The Philippines, like much of the world, now embraces a culture of grievance over grace. We tut-tut from our ivory towers while the foundations rot.
Until we address the spiritual and cultural vacuum, these tragedies will continue. The Victorians understood character; we understand only therapy. Shame on us.
