Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has sparked controversy after choosing to attend a concert by pop star Katy Perry over a key national football match, prompting allegations of misplaced priorities. Trudeau, who was absent from Canada’s World Cup qualifier against Mexico on Tuesday, was spotted in the VIP section of Perry’s Toronto show, later posting on social media: “Boyfriend duties call.” The remark, a reference to light-hearted online commentary about his relationship with Perry, has been seized upon by political opponents who accuse him of trivialising his office.
The prime minister’s absence from the match, which Canada lost 2-1, drew immediate criticism from opposition leaders and football fans. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre described the move as “a dereliction of duty,” stating: “While Canadians are watching their national team fight for World Cup qualification, the prime minister opts for a pop concert and jokes about it.” Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet called it “a sign of growing detachment from the priorities of ordinary Canadians.”
Trudeau’s office defended the decision, saying the prime minister had a prior engagement with Perry, whom he has described as a family friend. A spokesperson noted that Trudeau had attended several football matches earlier in the year and that his schedule could not accommodate the match. However, the explanation has done little to quell the backlash.
The incident comes at a politically sensitive time for Trudeau, whose Liberal government faces declining approval ratings amid rising inflation and housing costs. The prime minister’s relationship with Perry, a California-born singer known for hits such as “Roar” and “Firework,” has been a subject of tabloid speculation for months. Trudeau, who separated from his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau in 2023, has been photographed with Perry at several events, though neither has confirmed a romantic link.
Social media reaction was swift and largely negative. Hashtags such as #BoyfriendDuties and #TrudeauOut trended on Twitter, with users posting memes comparing the prime minister’s priorities unfavourably to those of ordinary Canadians. One widely shared post read: “Justin Trudeau cannot be reached. He is busy performing ’boyfriend duties’ while the rest of us worry about rent and groceries.”
The controversy also raises questions about the prime minister’s use of taxpayer-funded security and resources for personal engagements. While the PMO has stated that Trudeau attended the concert in a private capacity, the presence of RCMP security and government vehicles has drawn scrutiny. Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner called for an investigation into the costs incurred.
Trudeau has yet to comment directly on the criticism, though his social media post from the concert remains visible. The prime minister is scheduled to travel to Ottawa later this week for cabinet meetings, where the issue is expected to be raised.
For Trudeau, the episode underscores a recurring narrative of a leader perceived as more focused on celebrity culture than governance. As Canada’s national football team continues its World Cup campaign without the prime minister’s visible support, the political fallout from a single pop concert may linger. The incident serves as a reminder that for public figures, even light-hearted remarks can carry heavy political weight.
