The White House has announced an emergency repair programme for the National Mall’s Reflecting Pool, following a severe algae bloom that has turned the iconic water feature a murky green. President Donald Trump ordered the immediate restoration, reportedly after viewing the pool’s condition during a morning walk. The National Park Service, which oversees the site, confirmed that the bloom was caused by a combination of warm weather, nutrient runoff, and stagnant water.
The repair plan includes drainage, scrubbing of the basin, and installation of a new filtration system. British experts from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, have been consulted for their experience in managing algae in ornamental water features. A spokesman for the UK delegation in Washington said the offer of guidance was part of routine diplomatic cooperation on cultural heritage maintenance.
The project is expected to take two weeks and cost an estimated $1.2 million. Critics have questioned the urgency, noting that the pool has suffered similar problems in the past.
Administration officials, however, emphasised the symbolic importance of the Reflecting Pool as a national landmark. The repair comes days before the annual Fourth of July celebrations, ensuring the pool is clear for the event. The White House declined to comment on whether the President’s personal involvement in the matter was a diversion from other pressing issues.
The UK’s involvement is seen as a soft-power gesture, reinforcing the special relationship through environmental expertise. The National Park Service will monitor water quality tests before refilling the pool. This is the first major repair of the Reflecting Pool since 2012.
