Italian authorities have arrested two individuals following a minivan fire that killed four migrant farm workers in the southern region of Apulia. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening near the town of San Severo, when a vehicle carrying workers from a local farm burst into flames. Police confirmed that the driver and another suspect are in custody, though their identities have not been formally disclosed.
The motive remains under investigation, with prosecutors examining possible links to labour exploitation or arson. The victims, all migrant workers from sub-Saharan Africa, were employed in the agricultural sector. The fire has reignited debate over the treatment of migrant labour in Italy, where thousands of workers face precarious conditions.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences while emphasising the need for stricter regulation of farm labour. The arrests were made after forensic teams identified traces of accelerants at the scene, suggesting the fire was deliberately set. Local officials have declared a day of mourning.
The case has drawn international attention, with human rights organisations calling for a thorough inquiry.
