The bodies of two Italian nationals missing in the Maldives have been recovered from a submerged cave, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The operation involved British divers who were part of an international rescue effort that concluded late Tuesday. The Italians, a man and a woman in their 30s, had been reported missing after a diving excursion in the South Male Atoll.
The cave, known for its complex underwater passages, presented significant challenges to rescue teams. Officials have not disclosed the cause of death pending post-mortem examinations. The British divers were attached to a private maritime security firm contracted by the Maldivian government.
Their assistance was requested due to their expertise in cave diving and deep-water recovery operations. The incident has renewed scrutiny of safety protocols for diving tourism in the Maldives, which is heavily reliant on its marine attractions. The Italian embassy in Colombo has been informed and is liaising with the families.
The Foreign Office in London confirmed the involvement of British nationals in the operation but declined to provide further details. No foul play is suspected at this stage.
