A prominent Ugandan lawyer has been charged with treason in a case that is sending shockwaves through the British Commonwealth. The lawyer, whose identity is being withheld for legal reasons, was arrested after allegedly criticising the Ugandan government’s human rights record. The charges, which carry a possible death sentence, have been condemned by international legal experts as an attack on the rule of law.
For the Commonwealth, a bloc that prides itself on upholding democratic principles, this case is a test of its commitment to those values. The British government, which has historically maintained close ties with Uganda, has so far offered only a muted response. Critics argue that the UK must do more to protect fundamental freedoms within the Commonwealth, especially given its role as the organisation’s leader.
The trial is expected to begin next month, and it will be watched closely by human rights groups around the world.
