A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for plotting an Islamic State-inspired attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The plot, which was foiled by UK and Austrian intelligence services, targeted the Eras Tour stop at the Ernst Happel Stadium in August 2024. Sources confirm the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, planned to use knives and homemade explosives to target concertgoers.
He was arrested in a joint operation between MI5 and the Austrian Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Uncovered documents show he had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and was in contact with an overseas handler. The judge described him as 'a present danger to the public' and said his plan was 'methodical and deadly'.
The conviction is a significant victory for UK counter-terrorism efforts, which have been under scrutiny after a series of foiled plots in recent years. The man's sentence includes an extended licence period of five years after release. The Taylor Swift concert in Vienna proceeded without incident, though security was tightened.
The case has reignited debates about online radicalisation and the need for tougher laws on extremist content.
