The Royal Navy is monitoring a Russian warship in the English Channel after its crew fired warning shots at a British yacht, escalating tensions in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the Russian vessel, identified as the patrol ship Vasily Bykov, discharged small arms fire across the bow of the yacht, which was flying a British flag, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.
The yacht, named the "Sea Breeze," was sailing from France to the United Kingdom when it ignored commands from the Russian ship to alter course, a defence source said. The Russian crew fired approximately 20 rounds before the yacht complied and changed direction. No injuries were reported, and the yacht later resumed its journey under the escort of a Royal Navy frigate.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the action as "reckless and unlawful" during a press conference in London. "We will not tolerate any threat to British vessels in international waters," he said. "The Royal Navy has been instructed to maintain a visible presence in the area to ensure the safety of all shipping."
The Russian defence ministry issued a statement claiming that the yacht had failed to respond to identification requests and had been manoeuvring dangerously. It insisted that the warning shots were a standard procedure to ensure maritime security.
International maritime law, as codified in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, permits a state to board a vessel on the high seas only if it is stateless or if there are reasonable grounds to suspect piracy, slavery, or unauthorised broadcasting. Analysts suggest that the Russian action may constitute a violation of these rules.
"This is a significant escalation by Russia in a strategic chokepoint," said Professor James Rogers, a naval expert at the University of Exeter. "The English Channel is a vital artery for global trade. Any disruption here has immediate economic and political consequences."
The incident comes as NATO increases its naval presence in the region following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The alliance has repeatedly warned Moscow against any actions that could disrupt commercial shipping.
The Foreign Office has summoned the Russian ambassador for an explanation. A spokesperson said that the UK would raise the matter at the United Nations Security Council.
The Royal Navy has deployed the Type 23 frigate HMS Argyll to monitor the Vasily Bykov as it continues its transit through the Channel. The Russian warship is expected to exit the area within 24 hours.
