Britain's largest telecom operators issued a stark warning today that the alleged theft of artificial intelligence technology by Chinese firms poses a direct threat to national security. The alert follows a formal accusation by Anthropic, the American AI safety company, against Alibaba for allegedly misappropriating proprietary algorithms used in large language models. Speaking to the Financial Times, a senior executive from BT Group stated, 'This is not just a corporate dispute.
If core AI architectures are compromised, our critical infrastructure from 5G networks to energy grids becomes vulnerable.' Vodafone UK echoed the sentiment, calling for immediate government intervention to secure the digital supply chain. The accusations centre on claims that Alibaba's recent 'Tongyi' model bore striking similarities to Anthropic's 'Claude' system.
AI experts note that such theft could allow adversarial nations to embed backdoors or bias into models used by Western enterprises. However, some caution against overreaction. 'We must balance security with the open science that has driven AI progress,' said Dr.
Emily Baxter of Cambridge. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre has launched an investigation, promising to 'ensure the integrity of our AI ecosystem.
