Kyiv has confirmed that one of its drones struck Romanian territory during a coordinated assault on Russian cargo vessels in the Black Sea. The admission, buried in a late-night statement from the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, marks a dangerous escalation in the conflict and threatens to drag NATO member Romania into direct confrontation with Russia. Sources close to the investigation confirm that the drone, part of a wave of unmanned aerial vehicles targeting ships suspected of carrying military supplies to Moscow, veered off course and exploded near the Romanian port of Constanța.
Romanian officials had initially denied any breach of their airspace, but satellite imagery and intercepted communications tell a different story. Documents obtained by this newsroom reveal that Ukrainian operators lost control of the drone shortly after launch, likely due to electronic warfare interference from Russian forces stationed in the region. The blast injured two Romanian fishermen and sparked a brief fire that was quickly contained.
The incident comes amid a months-long campaign by Ukraine to disrupt Russian shipping in the Black Sea, a critical artery for Moscow's war effort. But Monday's attack marked a new low: targeting commercial vessels in international waters with no clear evidence of military affiliation. 'We are seeing a pattern of reckless behaviour,' said a senior Western intelligence official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
'They are playing with fire, and now it has burned a neighbour.' The Romanian government has summoned the Ukrainian ambassador for an explanation and has demanded a full investigation. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has seized on the incident as proof that Kyiv is an unreliable actor.
'This is what happens when you arm a rogue state,' said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova in a statement. The United States has called for restraint, but privately, administration officials are furious. One State Department aide described the incident as 'a colossal own goal' that undermines Ukraine's moral authority and gives Putin exactly the narrative he needs to justify escalating his own strikes.
For now, both sides are scrambling to contain the fallout. But in the murky waters of the Black Sea, where drones and missiles are rewriting the rules of modern warfare, the next miscalculation could be the one that triggers a much wider conflict.
