A quiet Tuesday morning in Washington was shattered by an act of vandalism that has left the National Mall's iconic Reflecting Pool drained and scarred. The National Park Service confirmed that the pool's liner was deliberately slashed overnight, forcing an emergency draining and closure of the site. The pool, a centrepiece of the Lincoln Memorial grounds, was designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens as part of the memorial's original 1922 landscape.
This is not just an attack on a monument, it is an attack on the bond between our nations," said Park Service Superintendent Jeffrey Reinbold. The pool, a 2,000-foot-long mirror of water, is a cherished spot for reflection and protest.
The repair costs are estimated at over £500,000, a sum that the Park Service says will be redirected from other maintenance projects. Union leaders representing park maintenance workers expressed frustration. Our crews are already stretched thin with budget cuts,"
said Gwendoline Harris of the American Federation of Government Employees. This senseless act will set back other essential repairs." The Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation but has not yet identified suspects.
The British Embassy offered condolences, calling the pool "a living symbol of our shared history." For now, the pool sits empty, its liner a torn scar.
Tourists and locals alike peered over the barrier, many shaking their heads. It's heartbreaking," said Maria Santos, a teacher from Ohio visiting with her family.
This pool is where we come to think about our country. Now it's just... gone."
The Park Service promises a full restoration, but for the working families who rely on the Mall for respite and income, the blow is hard. The pool's silence is a stark reminder of how even our most sacred public spaces are vulnerable to the anger of the few.
