A three-year-old child, orphaned in the earthquake that struck Venezuela six days ago, was pulled alive from the rubble on Tuesday. Rescue workers, operating with minimal equipment, discovered the girl in a pocket of space beneath a collapsed apartment block in the city of Cumaná. The child, whose name has not been released, is believed to be the sole survivor of her immediate family.
She was found dehydrated but with no life-threatening injuries. The disaster, which registered 7.3 on the Richter scale, has left an estimated 12,000 people displaced and over 300 confirmed dead.
Relief efforts remain hampered by damaged infrastructure and fuel shortages. The rescue has provided a rare moment of solace in a crisis that continues to strain the country’s fragile institutions. The child is now under the care of the state, pending further inquiries into her welfare.
