The ground shakes in Venezuela, and once again we are treated to the spectacle of a failed state. The aftershock, a cruel aftershock of nature’s indifference, has left thousands stranded. But let us not pretend this is merely a geological event.
This is the final tremor of a socialist experiment that has been decaying for years, a corpse that refuses to be buried. British aid is en route, a noble gesture that reeks of imperial condescension. We send our lifeboats, our food parcels, our gentle pats on the head.
But do we ask why Venezuela is so vulnerable? Do we question the ideological rot that made this disaster so catastrophic? The Maduro regime, a puppet show for dictators, has squandered oil wealth and destroyed infrastructure.
Now, when the earth moves, it crumbles like the regime’s promises. The British public, with their stiff upper lips and charitable hearts, will open their wallets. But they should also open their minds.
This is what happens when you trade freedom for false promises. Let the aid flow, but let the lesson be learned: socialism is the earthquake that never stops.
