A British couple has described a terrifying encounter with a Russian warship in the North Sea, as the Royal Navy announced it would increase patrols in response to rising tensions. The couple, who were sailing off the coast of northeast England, said they were targeted by ‘warning fire’ from a Russian vessel that they believed was attempting to intimidate them.
Speaking from their home in Hull, Mark and Sarah Thompson, both 58, recounted the incident that occurred last week. ‘We were about 30 miles out, just enjoying a weekend sail, when we saw this massive grey ship approaching. It came very close, and then we heard a loud crack. We saw a flash and realised they had fired a shot across our bow,’ said Mark, a retired dockworker. ‘It was terrifying. We’ve never felt so vulnerable.’
The couple, who have sailed for over 20 years, said they immediately altered course and headed back to shore. The Royal Navy confirmed that a Russian warship, identified as the ‘Admiral Gorshkov’-class frigate, had been operating in the area and that its actions were ‘consistent with warnings’ to commercial and civilian vessels. However, the Navy stressed that such incidents are rare and that the safety of UK citizens is paramount.
The incident comes amid a backdrop of heightened military activity in the North Sea, with both NATO and Russian forces conducting exercises. The Royal Navy announced it would increase patrols and deploy additional vessels to reassure the public and protect fishing and shipping lanes. ‘Our forces are ready to respond to any threat, and we will not tolerate any intimidation of British citizens,’ said a Ministry of Defence spokesperson.
For the Thompsons, the encounter has left a lasting impression. ‘We’re not going to be scared off, but we’ll be more careful. The sea should be a place for everyone, not a battlefield,’ said Sarah, a former nurse. Their story highlights the real-life consequences of geopolitical tensions, where ordinary people get caught in the crossfire. As the Navy steps up its presence, the hope is that such warning shots remain just that: a warning, and not a prelude to something worse.
