UK football officials have called for an urgent review into the new World Cup group stage format, branding the changes 'unfair' and warning they could distort the competition's integrity. The reform, introduced by FIFA for the 2026 tournament, will expand the tournament to 48 teams and restructure group stages into 16 groups of three, with only the group winners advancing to a knockout round of 32. Critics argue this reduces the number of games and increases the risk of collusion, as a final group match between two teams could determine which one progresses alongside the group winner.
'This isn't the World Cup we know,' said a spokesperson for the Football Association. 'We are demanding a full review before the changes are cemented. Fans deserve a tournament that rewards genuine footballing merit, not tactical guesswork.
' The outcry echoes broader concerns about FIFA's growing commercialism, with critics accusing the governing body of prioritising profits over the sport's soul. The FA is now pushing for consultation with all home nations to present a united front. The final decision rests with FIFA's council, which is expected to meet later this year.
