The Home Office has announced an immediate tightening of dual citizenship regulations following the discovery of a loophole exploited by several footballers seeking to switch national teams before the 2026 World Cup. The move, confirmed by Whitehall sources on Tuesday, comes after a surge in applications from players with UK passports requesting to represent other countries under FIFA eligibility rules. The loophole allowed athletes to hold multiple citizenships and change national allegiances without meeting residency requirements.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described the practice as a 'clear abuse of our nationality system' and said the new measures would require applicants to demonstrate a 'genuine and enduring connection' to the country they wish to represent. The changes will affect up to 30 players currently in the process of switching, including several from the English Premier League. FIFA has yet to comment, but the Home Office insists the rule change is a matter of domestic law, not sporting governance.
