KYIV. The Ukrainian government is facing mounting diplomatic pressure to resolve a historical dispute with Poland concerning the name of a Second World War-era military unit, with British officials reportedly offering to mediate. The row, which has strained bilateral relations between the two Nato allies, centres on the Ukrainian 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, known as the SS Galizien.
Warsaw condemns the unit as a Nazi collaborationist force responsible for atrocities against Polish civilians. Ukrainian authorities have been reluctant to renounce the unit entirely, citing its role in the broader Ukrainian independence struggle against Soviet domination. British diplomats, seeking to preserve Eastern European unity in the face of Russian aggression, have signalled a willingness to facilitate talks.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, already managing a full-scale war, now faces the complex task of balancing nationalist sentiment at home with the strategic imperative of maintaining Polish support. Any compromise will be watched closely by Kyiv’s other Western backers.
