A security review of World Cup celebrations in Mexico City has been requested by British police following a stampede that left four people dead and dozens injured. The incident occurred on Sunday evening in the Zocalo, the city’s main square, where thousands had gathered to watch the England-Mexico match on a giant screen. The stampede began when a group of fans surged towards a barrier, causing it to collapse.
Three men and a woman died at the scene, with at least 30 others sustaining injuries. Mexican authorities have launched an investigation, and the British Embassy has offered consular assistance. The Metropolitan Police said they would examine the event’s organisation to inform future planning for large-scale public gatherings in the UK.
The review will focus on crowd control, barrier placement and emergency response protocols. The World Cup continues with heightened security across host cities.
