Japan’s Defence Minister has delivered a blistering critique of Beijing’s expanding arsenal, labelling it an unprecedented threat to regional stability. Speaking at a joint press conference in Tokyo with UK Defence Secretary John Healey, the minister warned that China’s rapid missile deployment and naval modernisation represent a clear strategic pivot towards aggression. The UK, for its part, reaffirmed its commitment to the Indo-Pacific tilt, pledging enhanced naval patrols and intelligence sharing with Japan.
This is not posturing. It is a direct response to PLA’s quantitative and qualitative leaps in strike capabilities. The UK’s Carrier Strike Group deployment later this year will test the credibility of Western resolve.
Meanwhile, Japan’s own defence budget increase to 2% of GDP signals a historic shift, though questions remain over logistics and manpower. The chessboard is set. The only question is who moves first.
